Twelve Things You Can Do to End Domestic Violence

  1. Raise your awareness and understanding about issues related to domestic and sexual violence.  Examine your own belief systems and behaviors to understand how you can help put a stop to domestic violence.

  2. Make the commitment.  Agree to never commit, condone or remain silent about domestic violence.

  3. Start prevention early.  Teach boys and girls that it's never cool to hurt anyone with words or by force.

  4. Bring the message to schools, churches, the workplace, your community.  Design an anti-violence poster and hang it in areas that can spread the word.

  5. Host a Saving Grace Campaign.  Use the Saving Grace Toolkit to host a Saving Grace Campaign to raise domestic violence awareness.

  6. Get your friends and family -- women and men -- to join you.

  7. Raise funds and donate the proceeds to your national or local domestic violence programs, to a local women's safehouse (shelter) or to a men's support group.  Or, make a tax-deductible donation to a domestic violence organization of your choice.

  8. Consider volunteering.  There are a number of ways you can help.  Contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE to obtain a list of programs in your area.

  9. Get men involved.

  10. Verify your workplace policies to prevent domestic violence.  Check with your employer to ensure there are policies in place to:  a) help and support a victim who is employed by that company; b) hold an abuser accountable if he is using office resources to stalk, harass or harm a victim (i.e., office phones, computers, email, car, etc.)

  11. Lead by example.  Embrace a positive attitude about women and men and speak out against negative attitudes and behaviors.  Set an example for your friends, family and children.

  12. If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, contact the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE and reach out for Help!
