Hosting a Saving Grace Event
One way for you to get involved and help to put a STOP to domestic violence is to host a Saving Grace event. It is a simple way to help spread the word and raise awareness about the seriousness of domestic violence. Raising awareness is key to helping to end domestic violence.
Here are some tips on hosting a Saving Grace event:
- Plan as far in advance as possible.
- Choose a place to host the event.
- Recruit volunteers.
- Contact your state domestic violence coalition and/or a regional/local domestic violence program and invite them to participate in the event.
- Invite community leaders, your church, friends, family, and others. Don’t forget to invite battered women, men and children.
- Invite a guest speaker, preferably a domestic violence expert and/or survivor.
- Create a flyer to announce your event.
- Work with local businesses, the library, or church to display your literature.
- Notify the media about your event and invite them to participate.
- Be creative.
- Include music, poetry, special moments of silence, personal stories shared by women.
- Host a poetry reading, literary tea, music contest event, dance, comedy fest, lunch or dinner gathering.
- Invite a group of friends and family to dinner, create a theme around ‘ending domestic violence’ and have a group discussion.
- Host an art show. Contact a local gallery to host the event. Or simply, put on an art show yourself.
- Host a pottery class at a local pottery gallery. Invite friends, family and others to participate. Have a discussion about the seriousness of domestic violence while you're making something beautiful.
- Host a bowling party and create a theme around ‘ending domestic violence’.
- Contact your local library to see if you can host an event at the library.
- Plan a rally, candlelight vigil or a march.
- Create a 'domestic violence ministry' at your church.
- Workplace ‘lunch and learn’ or other workplace ‘events’ are a great place to raise awareness. Contact your human resources professional to inquire about hosting an event in the workplace.
