Are The Laws Stiff Enough to Protect Women? > Doctors Orders

When a woman is seen by her physician and he suspects abuse by the bruises and her actions, the law should be immediately involved and a prescription or sentance should be jail or anger management Counseling.

Hello Roger,

When a woman is seen by her physician (either in a physician's office or Hospital) and he or she suspects abuse, the physician reports the abuse to law enforcement.

Anger management is not compulsory in the state of Maryland (where I reside): the judge is not required to order the defendant to attend anger management classes. Only when the attorney for the petitioner makes such a requests will a judge court order the defendant to attend such classes.
House of Ruth provides a 22 week program for abusers. However, because offenders are court ordered to take these classes, the success rate of these classes is not as high as we would like it to be... in other words, these classes do not change the person's behavior and train of thought...

Cheers,
Elda

The one thing that must be kept in mind is that Domestic Violence is not any anger issue. It is about one individual exerting power and control over another. Having someone seek anger management doesn't do any good. The abuser has to see that he/she is in need of so type of counseling to help them identify with their behavior. Just like victims need to know what signs to look for abusers need to know if they have the characteristics of being an abuser. This can only happen with education and counseling.
